Perfectionism: Your superpower or your biggest obstacle?

How to turn your perfectionism into a trainable strength

As a perfectionist, you know the feeling: nothing is ever good enough. Your high standards drive you to peak performance, but sometimes also to exhaustion. The good news: perfectionism can be trained!

My mission: to show you how to selectively switch your perfectionism on and off depending on the situation. As the author of the book "Perfectionism: Superpower or Handicap?", co-developer of the 8-week training program "To Becoming a Happy Perfectionist", and a long-time manager in both German and international companies, I bring over 25 years of experience. The key is not to fight perfectionism, but to understand it and manage it according to the situation. In my previous work as a mental coach, including at the regional training center in Bogen, the Bundesliga women's volleyball team of SC Potsdam And I've learned from managers in the IT industry that perfectionism can become your greatest strength – if you know how to switch gears depending on the situation.

What is healthy perfectionism?

Not all perfectionism is the same. There is a crucial difference between healthy and unhealthy perfectionism:

Healthy perfectionism:

  • High standards that motivate
  • Flexibility in achieving goals
  • Focus on improvement, not perfection
  • Self-compassion in the face of mistakes
  • Ability to accept "good enough".

Unhealthy perfectionism:

  • Paralyzing fear of making mistakes
  • all-or-nothing thinking
  • Self-criticism and self-doubt
  • Procrastination due to fear of imperfection
  • Burnout due to excessive demands

In my 30-year coaching career, I've seen athletes and leaders stunted by unhealthy perfectionism. At the same time, I've seen others achieve peak performance through healthy perfectionism. The difference lies in the mental attitude and the right techniques.

My approach

My approach is based on three pillars:

1. Develop a perfectionism switch
Learn to consciously switch your perfectionism on and off. For important presentations: full concentration on details. For routine tasks: 80% is perfectly sufficient.

2. Activate flow states
As an archer, I know that in a state of flow, high standards merge with effortless performance. This state can be trained and reproduced.

3. Build mental strength
Perfectionists tend to be self-critical. I'll show you how to build your mental strength and develop self-compassion without lowering your standards.

This approach works in both sports and business. Whether you're a manager under pressure or an athlete striving for peak performance, the principles are the same.
